Here we have a very special Vintage Sterling Silver Capstan Inkwell or Ink Stand from the 1940s. It comes in a presentation bag and would be a greatcalligraphy gift or used as desk decor.
It was made by Adie Brothers Ltd and it was Hallmarked in Birmingham in 1947.
This unique inkwell was given as a gift to Miss Reed in 1949 by the Arusha School in Tanzania. Arusha was a well known international school and Miss Reed was Assistant Mistress from 1934 to 1949. It's a lovely piece of history.
It is a beautiful capstan shape, made of Sterling Silver with an inscription on the front and the Hallmarks on the side. The hinge works well and it lifts to show a built in liner for ink. It is filled and has a plastic base.
The silver is shiny with some tarnish in places, particularly to the inside of the lid. The lid also has a dent to it in the centre.
It weighs 304g and measures 8.5cm diameter (just under 3 1/2 inches). The height is approximately 6cm (2 1/2 inches).
