Here we have a beautiful Victorian Solid Sterling Silver Fruit Knife from the 1870s. It would be ideal for slicing apples or other fruit.
It comes in a gift bag and would be a great present for a birthday or wedding anniversary.
It was made by Thomas Prime and Son and it was hallmarked in Sheffield in 1877. Thomas Prime was a Silversmith based in Northwood St, Birmingham active from 1864 to 1887.
The fruit knife has a Sterling Silver blade featuring the hallmarks and maker’s mark on one side. It has a pretty Mother of Pearl handle has a lovely etched design featuring flowers and a dotted pattern. On one side it has AG elaborately engraved although the initials are quite worn. The blade folds back into the handle with the tip protruding.
The Silver blade is shiny with a number of kinks to the blade, a few nicks and a slightly bent tip. The blade goes slightly upward rather than level with the handle but this doesn't affect it's use. The Mother of Pearl is beautifully smooth with a small chip to the Pearl near the blade. All of this has been taken into account when pricing.
It’s measures 11.4cm when fully open (4 3/8 inches) and 6.9cm when closed (nearly 2 3/4 inches).
