This is a fantastic pair of mens small binoculars or opera glasses from the 1800s. It comes in a lovely green gift bag and would be a great present.
They were made by Chevalier Opticien of Paris. Chevalier were famous for making good quality binoculars and opera glasses. The company was founded in 1765 and ran until the end of the 19th Century.
In the second half of the 1800s opera glasses were an essential fashion accessory for theatre goers and they were often given as gifts. This one is black with brass rims. The eye pieces have Chevalier Opticien Paris imprinted and across the middle arm it has 8 Lens inscribed.
They're in good condition. The wheel moves easily to adjust focus.. There is a bit of dust and dirt in the lens but this doesn't prevent them being used. Small areas of the black lacquer has come off over time but this adds to the antique look of the glasses.
They measure 10.5cm (just over 4 inches) across the end and 10cm (4 inches) across the eye piece end. Their height is 6.75cm (2.5 inches) extending to 9cm (3.5 inches).
