This is a very pretty Antique Sterling Silver Butter Knife or Butter Spreader with a Mother of Pearl handle, made in the mid 1800s. It would look great on a table for serving butter.
It comes in a gift bag and would be a lovely present.
It was made by George Unite and it was hallmarked in Birmingham in 1840. The hallmarks are on the back of the blade.
The knife has a lovely design to the Sterling Silver curved blade and a beautifully elegant Mother of Pearl handle. It has a gothic B on the handle and ESJC elaborately engraved at the top of the blade.
It has a kink in the middle of the blade which can be seen in the photos but wouldn’t affect its use. The silver is shiny and the Mother of Pearl handle is smooth and shows all the beauty that Pearl has. It is in good condition.
It measures 16.4cm in length (6 3/8 inches).
