American Sterling Silver Matchbox Holder, Silver Matchbox Case
This is a lovely vintage Sterling Silver Matchbox holder made between 1910 and the 1930s. It comes in a lovely presentation bag and would be a great gift.
It was made by George A Henckel and Co of New York. It features their makers mark. It also has Sterling, 5056 and JE Caldwell & Co imprinted. Caldwell was the jewellers where it was originally for sale.
It has a lovely engineered design on both sides and a patterned cartouche in one corner. There are gaps on both sides so matches can be struck.
It has a Swedish La Petite Matchbox inside but no matches. However today's standard size matches do fit into the La Petite Matchbox.
It is in good condition with some tarnish spots in places, particularly on the sides, which add to the vintage look. It has a a couple of small bends to the sides but matchboxes still fit in it.
It is a bit too small to fit todays standard size matchboxes And more suitable for promotional or handmade matchboxes. It fits ones that are sized 4.2cm by 2.7cm with a depth of 1.2cm (1 5/8 inches by just over 1 inch with a depth of 1/2 inch).
It weighs 10.1g without the matchbox inside.
The item qualifies for free UK delivery.
