This is a lovely vintage Sterling Silver Matchbox holder made between 1910 and the 1930s. It comes in a presentation bag and would be a great gift.
It was made by George A Henckel and Co of New York. It features their makers mark. It also has Sterling, 5056 and JE Caldwell & Co imprinted. Caldwell was the jewellers where it was originally for sale.
It has a lovely engineered design on both sides and a diamond cartouche that has McC engraved in it.
It has a Vintage Swedish La Petite Matchbox inside but no matches.
It’s in good condition with some tarnish spots in places, particularly on the sides which add to the vintage look. It has a couple of small bends to one side but the La Petite matchbox still fits in it.
It’s a bit too small to fit today’s standard size matchboxes, however today’s standard size matches such as Swan Vestas do fit in the La Petite Matchbox at a diagonal angle. La Petite Matches are also available on both eBay and Etsy and do fit the holder.
The holder is 4.1cm by 2.7cm with a depth of 1.2cm (1 5/8 inches by just over 1 inch with a depth of 1/2 inch).
This item was beautiful, authentic and delivered extremely promptly. Catherine was a delight to deal with, and I was very honoured to be able to purchase a piece of her family history.
